Health & Fitness
Come and enjoy Bollyrobix (exercise to Bollywood music) every Saturday, 7.30am to 8.30am, with a qualified instructor at Mahatma Gandhi Centre, 145 New North Road, Eden Terrace.
You don’t have to be fit or young. It suits people of all ages (men and women). You can exercise according to your own ability and fitness.
Why do we have to do the exercise?
More and more Indians are diagnosed with diseases and problems like diabetes, blood pressure, cardiovascular (heart) and obesity. To reduce the risk you need to do regular exercise. So exercise with your favorite music. It is time to take responsibility of your own health and make TIME to exercise.
Ella Kumar is qualified and registered exercise instructor. She is able to give nutritional information as well.
Fee for Bollyrobix: free for members of Auckland Indian Association and only $2.00 for non members.
The AIA has also organised at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre:

What melts in the mouth, swells in the stomach!
Dhiru M Patel
Unfortunately it is so true. Shravan month heralds the beginning of Hindu celebrations and festivities, Eid will soon be upon us, closely followed by Navratri, Dipawali and Christmas. All our celebrations are accompanied by one thing in common: good tasty food and lots of it. The downside is that it is usually also rich food – which can result in high cholesterol and high blood sugar and may consequently lead to obesity, diabetes and cardio vascular diseases (CVD). So this is the reason to keep in mind your health and fitness.
Alarming and eye opening statistics! South Asians (Indians, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and any person of Indian origin) have a high prevalence of diabetes compared to Europeans, Maoris and Pacific Island people. In Auckland 30,000 people have diabetes out of which 4,200 are South Asians. Indians in NZ also have a high rate of heart diseases compared to other ethnic groups in NZ.
The Auckland Indian Association (AIA) has organised a workshop supported by Procare. The workshop is aimed at educating people on the prevention and management of CVD and diabetes through lifestyle changes such as diet and exercises. The workshop will be run by South Asian Health Professionals comprising of a Diabetes Nurse specialist, registered Nutritionist and registered Fitness trainer.
The workshop will run on Sunday 18th September at Mahatma Gandhi Centre (MGC) from 11 am to 12.30 pm free of charge.
The wider Indian community is invited to attend the workshop and learn how they can prevent themselves from becoming another number in the statistics given above!!! We must understand the factors that put us at risk for diabetes and heart diseases.
To fight the above problems the AIA has also organised at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre:
- Bollyrobix: Every Sat 7.30am to 8.30am ($2.00 fee for non AIA members)
- Pilates: Every Mon 6.30pm to 7.15pm. (Fees: $2.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members)
- Walking group: Most Sundays and Thursdays 8.00am start
- Workshops
